I was just reading some Pablo Neruda. This one jumped out tonight.

Tonight I Can Write

Tonight I can write the saddest lines. Write, for example, 'The night is starry and the stars are blue and shiver in the distance.' The night wind revolves in the sky and sings. Tonight I can write the saddest lines. I loved her, and sometimes she loved me too. Through nights like this one I held her in my arms. I kissed her again and again under the endless sky. She loved me, sometimes I loved her too. How could one not have loved her great still eyes. Tonight I can write the saddest lines. To think that I do not have her. To feel that I have lost her. To hear the immense night, still more immense without her. And the verse falls to the soul like dew to the pasture. What does it matter that my love could not keep her. The night is starry and she is not with me. This is all. In the distance someone is singing. In the distance. My soul is not satisfied that it has lost her. My sight tries to find her as though to bring her closer. My heart looks for her, and she is not with me. The same night whitening the same trees. We, of that time, are no longer the same. I no longer love her, that's certain, but how I loved her. My voice tried to find the wind to touch her hearing. Another's. She will be another's. As she was before my kisses. Her voice, her bright body. Her infinite eyes. I no longer love her, that's certain, but maybe I love her. Love is so short, forgetting is so long. Because through nights like this one I held her in my arms my soul is not satisfied that it has lost her. Though this be the last pain that she makes me suffer and these the last verses that I write for her.

Word of the day

Some of you who have known me a while will remember my website from the old days -- about 1999 until 2001ish. It was sort of like a blog/facebook page, consisting of photos, what I had been up to, music interests, etc. It also featured a "word of the week" and a "quotation of the week." I remember that one of those years, I was maintaining the site from London. (ah, fondest memories...)

Anyway, I mention this only because I wanted to mention a recent word of the day. For those of you who don't know, I subscribe to A Word A Day - I think I've subscribed to this listserv for close to 10 years. I really dig it, and it is run by a person - Anu Garg! Although it has changed over the years, it has retained a personal feel to it that appeals to me.

The word of the day a couple days ago was mystagogue. For some reason, this word appeals to me, rolls off my tongue. And, even if you haven't seen this word before, you probably guess what it means! I'll leave the looking up part to you.

Thankful...

I'm thankful for my friends. I totally know how lucky I am to have you. I also really appreciate you sending me emails and starting conversations based on this blog. It's nice that when we talk or see each other, we are able to discuss things rather than spend all our time "catching up" - which is usually much more of a lop-sided conversation.

Furthermore, we can talk about personal stuff...like the stuff that doesn't make it to the blog. :)

The Gig

I was in Seattle for the weekend. Had dinner with Elana and Brandon (newlyweds!) and hung out with a new friend (Sam). Of course, no visit to the area is complete without going down the "The Gig!" I danced the night away with Naceem and Dave in Gig Harbor thanks to Dave's awesome music collection and impeccable drink mixing abilities. :) We cooked breakfast the next morning and had great conversation. I love Naceem & Dave - what great friends I have!

Banana did some bikin'!

This past weekend, I bought a bike, which I've been wanting to do for a couple weeks now.

I biked to work today - it was awesome! I was having such a good time that I biked right by my exit (off of the trail) and did not even notice. The bummer is that since it gets dark early nowadays, I have to remember to leave work around 4:45pm. Otherwise, I'll get stuck biking in the dark. It is like pitch black by 5:15 or 5:20pm!

But it was a great feeling...I'm on a little high right now! I also drank a full glass of silk nog today at work...nice!

Still Virtuosic After All These Years...

Two Sitars; Two Shankars; Three Raags; Two hours of perfection!

TJ and I went to Santa Cruz last night for the Ravi Shankar and Anoushka Shankar show. We started the night at the Saturn Cafe, where we shared a vegan bacon burger, vegan taquitos and each had organic amber ale brewed right there in Santa Cruz. Had a couple more beers at 99 Bottles of Beer on the Wall (Black Butte Porter on tap!) before heading over to the Civic Theatre.

Ravi Shankar is now 87 years old. What a gifted man. He still plays with an inimitable passion.
Anoushka is 26...incredibly talented and beautiful to boot. Individually, they are unforgettable. Together, they are a freight train. You just have to shake your head and let them thunder by. I got sucked in to the music, and before I knew it, a couple hours had passed and everyone was roaring their appreciation.

Of course, after the show, we had to go back to the Saturn Cafe (which is open until 3am!) and have vegan shakes before heading home and hitting the sack.

Sip o'Silk

Introduced some of my co-workers to Silk Nog today...we all had shots o' nog (yup, in shot glasses)! Everyone appreciated the beauty that is Silk Nog - yay!

Okay, if you know me at all you know of my love for Silk Nog. As far as I'm concerned, it is one of the best things about the holiday season. News flash: the kitchen at work has already begun stocking the Silk Nog for the season...LET THE NOGGIN' BEGIN!
